Label spotlight: Scissor Death
Scissor Death is a new label to me, having only recently been introduced to it a couple months ago. That being said, I was instantly struck by the great handmade packaging and excellent jams they offered up. Based out of Bloomington, Indiana (home of Secretly Canadian, Bluesanct, and a bunch of other cool stuff), Scissor Death's figurehead and operator, Nick Hoffman, has definitely cut out his own niche. Hoffman's own solo wares as Katchmare are the top attraction for my money, but honestly there's a ton of good stuff here to check out. Long live Scissor Death.
I started it in 2006 to document my work and the work of other outcasts and friends.
It's strange, I don't remember how exactly it came about. I think there was a newspaper headline... something about someone being killed with a pair of scissors. It made me think of Dial M for Murder and then somehow Scissor Death became the name of the label/collective. It's funny because some people tell me it's morbid, but I don't think it is at all. Really it's just ridiculous. It's more funny than morbid.
There is just a drive. It can't really be explained except to say that no one else can provide the same experience that Scissor Death provides. I don't mean that in a bragging way. There are thousands of labels and each one has something different to offer. No two could be the same even if they tried. Also it is a resistance effort. Useless though it may seem, this label is a resistance effort against the commonly held "values" of consumer culture.
Getting the music to people. Especially people who aren't already "initiated." It's such a small operation - mostly just me sending stuff out. At the most extreme I could send things at random or go out in the street ranting like a crazy person... who knows, maybe someone would be affected. Also I have a low tolerance for the internet. Sitting hunched over a computer is unnatural. These are big problems and there seems to be no clear answer yet.
Pierre Boulez! I'm a big fan.
Send 'em!
Katchmare Lathe 8", Katchmare + Antler Piss c20, Nick Hoffman + Ryu Hankil cd/tape/something... Other stuff that I'm not ready to talk about yet. Hopefully more multimedia stuff - books, dvds, 1000 microcassette box, etc. How much longer will we have enough drinking water to sustain the world's population?
True Primes "We Have Won" + Faxed Head "Exhumed at Birth"
Become a comedian. Maybe stock up on canned goods and water purifiers?
